Stewing hens are old laying hens that are past their prime for egg laying. We have them processed once they reach 2-2.5 years old to finish their life cycle as food. They are also called "tough old birds", and there's a reason for that. 


Once chickens get over 20 weeks old, their meat becomes tough and they are best cooked low and slow, for long periods of time. They are excellent for soups, stews, chicken salad, and of course broth. They are NOT good for grilling, roasting, frying, or other quick cooking methods.

These birds are an excellent way to get pasture raised chicken at the most economical price.

These chickens lived their best life rotated outside on pasture, eating bugs and grass, supplemented with locally-sourced, certified organic, soy-free feed and raw milk from our grass-fed dairy cows.
